The Isle of Jura

Hop on the Jura ferry, which operates from Port Askaig, and head for a day out on the Isle of Jura.
The ferry journey takes approximately fifteen minutes, a short crossing over the Sound of Islay. No booking is necessary, simply turn up when a ferry sailing is due, and purchase your ticket once onboard.

With just one single track road, following the east side of the island, you will be transported into a peace and tranquillity. Don’t be surprised if there are a herd of deer waiting at the ferry port to welcome you on you arrival. Known as Deer Island, Jura has more deer living on the island than inhabitants. Talking of Deer Island do stop by and visit the new Deer Island Rum Distillery. Situated in Jura’s only village, Craighouse.

Walking On Jura

If you enjoy walking Jura offers a wild and rugged terrain to explore, but do make sure you have sturdy walking boots and are equipped for these adventures. With the vast majority of the island unpopulated and only accessible on foot or by boat, it is important if you are planning a long trek or wish to hike up the Paps of Jura, that you have the right equipment. What might seem like a gentle breeze at ground level can be a huge gale once you clamber up the dizzying heights of the Paps.

He has vast local knowledge of the landscape and is a frequent competitor in the Jura Fell Race so knows those steep inclines intimately. Although Jura boasts many of these as it really is such an untamed wilderness.

Deer Island Rum

Jura has a fantastic rum distillery in Craighouse. Enjoy sampling their fabulous rum and you can even treat yourself to some rum tablet. It is delicious. Deer Island Rum

Lussa Gin

A trip to Jura wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Lussa Gin Distillery, based in Ardlussa. Follow the single track road out of Craighouse for a very scenic and picturesque drive to Lussa Gin Distillery. Here you can enjoy tours and tastings too. Lussa Gin

Persabus Farm, Port Askaig. Thanks to the excellent cottages at Persabus we had a really great 1st holiday on Islay. We were a party of 4 adults and five children and, by taking both cottages, we had plenty of room and enjoyed meals around the ample farmhouse table in Persabus cottage. Rosemary and Donald have kindly provided everything required for a good holiday. Right out of the door, there’s fantastic scenery, with views over to the famous Paps of Jura. A lovely quiet lane winds up the coast to the distillery at Bunnahabhain (excellent and informative tour by Scott). Close to ferry at Port Askaig so you could easily walk and go as foot passengers to Jura if you wanted to leave the car behind. We took the car and went up to Ardlussa, deer watching. We briefly explored most parts of Islay accessible by car. Interesting museum of Islay life at Port Charlotte. The one wet day was taken care of by Rosemary in the pottery- the children all loved doing their pots and I’m pleased to report no breakages on the way home. Having enjoyed plenty of Hebridean holidays in the past to other islands I have no hesitation in recommending Persabus and Islay. Many thanks Rosemary and Donald.
